I love pancakes, but I can’t make them that well the traditional way (unless burnt, unsightly cakes are your thing), so it goes without saying that I think the perfect pancake maker is an extremely innovative product. It’s not one of those as seen on TV products that exaggerate the difficulty of an everyday task that you can easily do on your own for its own market benefit – it really works.
I was a little surprised to hear from friends and other people who used it that it doesn’t work – at first, that made me laugh, because it’s a device, not an appliance, and unless you’re using it improperly (ie: not applying heat) there’s no way it really can’t work. I investigated the problems they were having, and what do you know, they weren’t using it properly.
A major complaint I’ve heard is that when you open the unit, the pancakes rip because they stick to the sides. When I saw this demonstrated, the pancake wasn’t even cooked thoroughly, so I wasn’t too surprised– think flipping a pancake over in a pan that hasn’t even browned or bubbled or whatever the telltale sign of cooked-ness is.
Naturally, in the perfect pancake maker, if you open it before it’s cooked, the batter will cling to the side and pull the pancake apart. Timing is everything with this device—I usually wait 40-45 seconds on high heat before flipping, and 50 to 60 on the flipside (gotta give the cool side time to heat!) and they turn out perfectly.
If you follow the instructions and place the unit properly on your heating source so that the pan can cook the pancakes evenly, you’ll have no such issue. Most people have nothing but success with this unit—it’s extremely easy to use for pancakes, eggs and even other things, like crepes and grilled cheese.
It’s very versatile too—people I know have used them on the grill and on wood burning stoves with no damage to the unit at all (though I wouldn’t recommend this unless you’re good at handling hot things over very high heat). It works fantastically for making a large amount of pancakes in a small amount of time. Best of all, the perfect pancake maker yields the same sized pancakes every time, so you’ll have pancakes worthy of a syrup ad every time.
